Bloomington Ayuda is partnering with Sergio Ospina Romero to help with the aftermath of the earthquake in Colombia on August 10th.

Colombians and Venezuelans share borders, food, music, and culture, but also tragedies. Amid complex migrations and disasters worldwide, we want to believe solidarity is still possible!

We are now raising funds both for Venezuela and Colombia, focusing on less privileged and Afro-descendant areas in both countries: El Chocó in Colombia and La Guaira in Venezuela. We are in contact with grassroots organizations in both countries, and we want to invite you to donate and show solidarity with these regions.

Colombia and Venezuela need the help that Bloomington can give!

We are a group of three Venezuelans living in Bloomington, seeking to help with crisis funding in the aftermath of the June 24th earthquakes in Venezuela.

Our families there are alive, but as many diasporic Venezuelans we are going through a lot of grief. Some of our friends and extended families are facing extremely difficult times having lost their loved ones, facing health problems, material loss, uncertainty and a massive collective mourning. Friends and organizations are working really hard as volunteers and preparing for the aftermath of this disaster and a long-lasting recovery.

We are creating this fund to help and inspire solidarity in the place we live, Bloomington. There is an important Latino community in this town and a Venezuelan presence made visible in restaurants, music and more, and you can show some support to us. The “Bloomington Ayuda” fund will be used to provide targeted funding to grassroots organizations in Venezuela, families, and individuals helping people affected by the disaster.

According to the UN, after the two earthquakes of June 24, almost two million Venezuelans are in need of humanitarian assistance. More than 70,000 people have been reported missing and only a small percentage of these people have been found. As is often the case during humanitarian crises, lower class communities, trans and LGBTQIA+ people, Afro-Venezuelan communities, and people who menstruate face heightened barriers to access aid. Our fund is focusing on:

How will we distribute the funds?

We will give the funds to already formed grassroots organizations like TRANS AFAB Venezuela or LABO Ciudadano.

Because we have direct relationships with family and friends who are volunteering on the ground, there are immediate needs that we can help fulfill by sending money directly (Dollars or Bolivares) to their rescue teams.

We will nurture specific family crowdfunding campaigns.

One of the goals of this campaign is to distribute the funds as directly as possible in Venezuela: to people who need it and to organizations that need it.

Note that we are not sending funds to all kinds of help, so if you want to donate to something specific we are also offering guidance to other fundraisers that might better align with what you are wishing to help for.

We have a big list of people working in Venezuela right now, but we will continue to find ways to help (we welcome suggestions!), as the aftermath is still incalculable.

Outside of fundraising and distributing funds, we are planning small events to promote socialization in this moment of collective grief with the Venezuelan community in Bloomington and all allies that want to stop by, chat and maybe give a hug. (Funds from this campaign will not be used for these get-togethers).

Somos un grupo de tres venezolanes viviendo en Bloomington, Indiana, y estamos levantando fondos para ayudar en el contexto de la crisis de los terremotos ocurridos en Venezuela el 24 de junio.

Nuestras familias están a salvo, pero como seres diaspóricos estamos pasando por un momento de mucho dolor y duelo. Algunos de nuestros familiares y familia extendida están enfrentando momentos extremadamente difíciles ya que han perdido a seres queridos, tienen problemas de salud, se enfrentan a grandes pérdidas materiales e incertidumbre en un duelo colectivo colosal. Organizaciones comunitarias y amistades están trabajando fuertemente como voluntarios y preparándose para las consecuencias de este desastre y su larga recuperación.

Estamos creando este fondo para ayudar y para inspirar la solidaridad en el lugar que vivimos, Bloomington. Hay una comunidad latina importante en esta ciudad y una presencia que se ha hecho visible a través de restaurantes, música y más, y pueden demostrarnos apoyo. El fondo “Bloomington Ayuda” se usará para ofrecer ayudas económicas específicas a organizaciones comunitarias en Venezuela, familias, e individuos ayudando a personas afectadas por el desastre.

De acuerdo a la ONU, luego de los dos terremotos de 7.2 y 7.5 el 24 de junio del presente año, casi dos millones de personas necesitarán ayuda humanitaria. Más de 70mil personas han sido reportadas como desaparecidas y sólo un pequeño porcentaje de personas han sido encontradas. Como suele ocurrir durante las crisis humanitarias, las comunidades de clase baja, personas trans y LGBTQIA+, las comunidades afrovenezolanas y las personas que menstrúan se enfrentan a mayores barreras para acceder a la ayuda.

¿Cómo distribuiremos los fondos?

Entregaremos los fondos a organizaciones de base ya constituidas, como TRANS AFAB Venezuela o LABO Ciudadano.

Ya que tenemos contacto directo con familiares y amigos que colaboran como voluntarios en el lugar, existen necesidades inmediatas que podemos ayudar a cubrir enviando dinero directamente (en dólares o bolívares) a sus equipos de rescate.

Apoyaremos campañas específicas de recaudación de fondos para familias.

Uno de los objetivos de esta campaña es distribuir los fondos de la manera más directa posible en Venezuela para personas y organizaciones que los necesitan.

Cabe destacar que no mandaremos fondos a todo tipo de iniciativas; por ello, si desea donar a una causa específica, podemos orientarle con nuestra base de datos de campañas de recaudación para que consiga una causa que se ajuste mejor a lo que desee apoyar.

Tenemos una lista de personas trabajando en Venezuela en este momento, pero seguiremos buscando maneras de ayudar (recibimos sugerencias), ya que la consecuencia de todo esto aún es incalculable.

Además de recaudar y distribuir los fondos, estamos planeando pequeños eventos para fomentar el apoyo mutuo en este momento de duelo colectivo con la comunidad venezolana en Bloomington y todos los aliados que deseen pasar a saludar, conversar y quizás darnos un abrazo. (Los fondos de esta campaña no se utilizarán para estos encuentros).
