Composting in Chicago: Fundraiser for Block Bins

I need your help bringing composting to Chicago, and helping our city fight the climate crisis.

I spent the last two years developing a composting service called Block Bins  that provides food scrap recycling bins to Chicago residents. Any Chicagoan can request a food scrap recycling bin for their block to share. Block Bins' goal is to create a dense network of recycling drop-off points in Chicago. The service launched this summer.

Now we're running out of bins. We need to purchase at least 112, 35 gallon totes. Each bin costs a bit over $50. These will be deployed to blocks throughout Chicago to make composting available to more Chicagoans. 

I would like to secure funding within the next two weeks so we can have new bins early next month, and to meet Chicago's rising demand for food scrap recycling without a lapse in service.

I've been putting as much of my time and savings into the Block Bins project as I can. It's reached a point where I can no longer fund this project out-of-pocket. Breaking even on the bin investment takes a long time and is not guaranteed. Many bins have even been stolen, which has been expensive and disheartening. But we can't give up. Composting is an essential measure to combat the climate crisis, and to resolve Chicago's major waste recycling issues.
