Black Novels for Grade 7s
I am a 7th grade teacher English Language Arts teacher in Calgary, Alberta. I am looking to raise funds to buy a class set of the graphic novel "New Kid" by Jerry Craft for my class. The book is about a black student attending a predominantly white school and navigating race, friendship, and peer pressure. I am hoping to teach it in during our unit on Black Canadian Literature.
Amidst the pandemic and colossal education cuts by our government, my school won't be able to afford a class set (let alone two, as I teach two sections of ELA 7, but I will do the units and read the books during different times for different sections).
Compounding this is the crucial and necessary step for students to learn about the Black Lives Matter movement and for schools to increase diversity and representation in our curriculum. We can only do this if supporters like you can help put diverse books into our classrooms for our kids to read!
In an effort to not buy off Amazon, I hope to bulk purchase straight from Harper Collins Publishing, the publisher of the book. One donation of 22$ buys one book for one kid!
Thus, at 22.00 a book, the total goal for my class of 35 students this year is $770.00.
Thank you in advance for supporting Black writers, helping our kids develop respect, and promoting diversity in our schools.
In gratitude,
Brent
