BLKOUT Walls Mural Festival Oakland, CA 2022

Donation protected

The BLKOUT Walls Mural Festival was conceived by Sydney G. James of Detroit, Michigan, Thomas Evans (Detour303) of Denver, Colorado and Max Sansing of Chicago, Illinois as a direct response to their shared history of
participating in mural festivals throughout the country.

Many of these festivals occur without remuneration for the participating artists, and most exhibit limited racial
diversity among the artists represented. These artists agreed to kick off the brand in James’ hometown of
Detroit, Michigan.

The inaugural festival in August 2021 brought 40 new murals to the North End community of Detroit. The Festival provided an opportunity for muralists of color from Detroit and across the United States to take part in a
collaborative endeavor that encouraged the artistic and economic reinvigoration of the North End Community
while providing the participating artists with expanded avenues of expression and economic support.

This summer, BLKout Walls will brighten the city streets of East Oakland, CA, with curated large-scale murals painted by world-renowned artists.

Oakland is the PERFECT location for BLKOUT Walls! Much like Detroit, when a person visits, more likely than not they'll experience a feeling of "familiarity;" similar to going over your favorite cousin's house or Grandma's house where all of your cousins will be.

The landscapes are different, but the "culture" is synonymous. Oakland artists will be able to add another layer of visual love to their hometown, and the invited artists from around the country and beyond who share the same ideals of cultural "service" will bless Oakland with their talents.

An annual, family-friendly event, the second BLKOUT Walls Mural Festival will occur in Summer 2022, and will be a ten-day, black lead/produced project. This festival is part of our ongoing initiative to help drive an arts-based economic development, or creative economy, within the Oakland community.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

The nationally renowned Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program (DAPCEP) has partnered with the BLKOUT Walls Mural Festival by serving two roles:

By helping us partner with like minded non-profit groups in the East Oakland community to deliver STEAM focused programming.
By serving as the fiscal agent for the BLKOUT Walls Mural Festival. DACPCEP and the BLKOUT Walls Mural Festival seek to engage

a similar demographic in the East Oakland community where the festival will be held.

Additionally, DAPCEP’s mission to prepare underrepresented youth for careers in STEM has expanded to include the arts(STEAM), and their participation in the BLKOUT Walls Mural Festival will ensure youth engagement and growth within the arts.
