I am blind and have asthma. My guide dog and I will be homeless on July 31, 2020. This fundraiser is to earn enough money to rent an apartment for one more year.
Currently my sole income is Social Security Income (SSI) and my entire monthly check is not enough to pay for housing where I live. I cannot move out of this area as all of my medical, financial, food, future work, mental health needs, and my dog's veterinary care are connected to where I live. I do not have any local family and my local friends are not well off enough to house me and Petey.
All funds from this fundraiser will go towards rent. I am combining them with everything I have in my savings and more than half of my monthly check. This additional year will hopefully be enough time for me to get a spot in one of the low income housing projects in my area (as of this writing I am on 3 waiting lists as well as the waiting list for a Section 8 housing assistance voucher; the wait time for any of these is 8 months to 5 years). I am continuing to apply for housing in my current city and neighboring areas but so far I have been told nothing will be available by July 31.
The apartments I am looking at are in the $600 to $900 monthly rent range. This is the cheapest I can find that still gives me access to public transportation (which is necessary as I cannot drive).
Thank you very much for your time, for spreading the word, and for any help you can give. Here's Petey asleep on the job.
