My name is Keabetswe( Kb) Ramalepa. I am a medical scientist by profession currently working in Western Australia. I had the privilege of working in Bamalete Lutheran Hospital as laboratory manager in the south eastern part of Botswana in a village called Ramotswa for about 5 years. While working there I realised the dire need for emergency medical equipment to help the ever hardworking medics to their work efficiently and effectively.
I was challenged and launched a project in 2022 to get help purchase 2 Cardiopulmonary resuscitation machines with help of friends all over the world. My wife and I were privileged to hand over machines in person to hospital management and staff in Dec 2022 at the hospital.
This year I got inspired again to help raise funds to purchase the maternity emergency machines, specifically vacuum extractor machine and vital sigbs monitors.
In a nutshell these 2 pieces of equipment are used in emergency delivery procedures to help remove the baby safely from the mother while assessing their real time( as it happens) vital signs( blood pressure and oxygen levels. In this way while vacuum is used to pull out the baby safely, it is done under controlled conditions to ensure best possible outcomes for both mom and baby.
Imagine going through months of joyful anticipation of baby boy or girl, while awaiting the good news from the medical staff, they bring not so good ones. Upon enquiry you are informed of the likehood of losing your precious child due complications of the pregnancy for which no appropriate equipment is available to assist in the safest delivery possible. Wouldn't this be very devastating?
What if that equipment was available at the medical facility and both your child and the mother got saved?
