Amris Bedford, the nine-year-old daughter of Ross and Marlee Walker Bedford of Blackshear, Georgia, has been diagnosed with a recurrence of AT/RT (Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumor), a very rare and aggressive brain cancer.
Amris was first diagnosed with AT/RT at the age of two; in 2012, she underwent successful treatment at St. Jude's Children 's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, where she has been monitored since. This week, she is flying with her parents to St. Jude's for further testing and to discuss a treatment plan.
Although treatment at St. Jude's is free, airplane tickets alone are $1,600 - $2,400+ for a family of four--and then there are the day-to-day expenses that add up quickly, especially when missing work.
A second cancer battle is difficult for anyone to face. Immediately alleviating some financial stressors will give the Bedford family a bit of comfort in the days to come.
