Sadly, this year someone special to us, Blake Heney, received the diagnosis that he had a rare but serious complication of Lyme disease, called Lyme meningitis. Meaning he was experiencing inflammation of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord due to a tick bite.
Blake was always known as a kid with a lot of energy. Some would say a dare devil but on the other hand the biggest sweetheart. He always enjoyed being outdoors. Either playing with his brother or running the bases at the ball field. Although, by the end of summer Blake was not himself. Symptoms of headaches, fever, body pain, nausea, and pure exhaustion took over. Blake’s parents began seeking medical attention. After various long nights in CHEO, Blake tested positive for the disease and began treatments.
Most children with Lyme disease who receive prompt and appropriate treatment recover fully without long-term effects. However, in cases where Lyme disease is not diagnosed and treated promptly, it can lead to more severe and chronic symptoms that may impact a child's quality of life and require ongoing medical care.
In Canada, while healthcare is publicly funded, some expenses related to Lyme disease treatment, such as medications and certain diagnostic tests, can end up not be fully covered. Often, patients have to pay out-of-pocket. As well, Canada does not provide some alternative treatments that have been successful in the United States.
Unfortunately, our Blake man is still not back to himself and concerns of further complications are at play. Blake’s parents have begun seeking out medical expertise across the border. Together, as friends, family, or fighters of Lyme disease, ask for your help. All proceeds will go towards medical finances that will be required to get this daredevil back on his feet.
We can’t thank you enough!
