Blaine’s Story
Site created on July 3, 2019

As most of you may have already heard Blaine has been having some health issues. I have set up this site so everyone is able to stay up to date through out his health journey. The first part of June Blaine was having some chest pain and was admitted to Midland Memorial Hospital. They preformed an angiogram (checks the arteries and veins in the heart for blockage) which was all clear no blockages. They also did an echo-cardiogram (sonogram of the heart) and sent him home on some meds to help with blood pressure and acid reflux. The cardiologist's office called and said they wanted Blaine to have a CT scan. After waiting all weekend to get the results they called and had us come in Monday morning to go over the results. We found out that Blaine has a Bicuspid Aortic Valve (the aortic valve should have 3 leaflets and his only has 2, and that he was born with it). They also said that he has an Ascending Aortic Aneurysm and that we were being referred to a surgeon to be evaluated for surgery. After meeting with the surgeon in Midland we were told that he would need multiple open heart surgeries over the years to fix the issues with his heart. The first surgery would be to fix the aneurysm due to the risk of it rupturing, which would be life threatening if it ruptured. Then later on when his heart valve didn't function as well he would need to eventually have it replaced. We asked to get a referral to Baylor Scott and White Heart Hospital in Plano as we wanted a second opinion. On July 1st we had an appointment with Dr. Brinkman that specializes in aortic aneurysms and Heart Valve replacements/repairs. Upon meeting with him and discussing all of Blaine's symptoms he has continued to have, he ordered some more testing. On July 2nd he reviewed those test and said he wanted Blaine to be admitted to the ER so that he could be monitored until he had the surgery to fix his aneurysm due to the fact that Blaine has had chest pain/discomfort and some shortness of breath.
