A 30-Year Journey to Protect Black History - and Our Future

Hi, my name is Ken Granderson, and I’ve been building technology to tell our stories for nearly 30 years.

Back in 1995, ten years after graduating from MIT, I had an idea:

What if Black history could be used to introduce our children to the power of computers?

So I created a multimedia CD-ROM based on a book about Boston’s Black history - one of the first projects of its kind in the world. My dream was to get it into Boston’s public schools.

But there was a problem: the schools in Boston’s Black neighborhoods didn’t have CD-ROM drives.

So the idea never made it into the classroom.

I didn’t give up.

Two years later, I launched BlackFacts , the world’s first Black History search engine - a website built by Black technologists, to show our community that the internet wasn’t just for others. It was for us.

Over the decades, we expanded the BlackFacts platform that now includes:

Over 1.5 million articles and videos on Black American, Afro-Latino, Caribbean, Native American and Asian American histories and notable figures

AI tools that help teachers in 14 states teach this history from their smart boards down to their smart phones

A living archive that centers voices too often erased

Now, we’re taking the next step.
