The Black Box Project is Creating Radical Theatre

Donation protected
The Black Box Project is raising funds to support the creation and development of new works by Black playwrights and theatre artists that is about more than representation; it's about LIBERATION. Below you can read more about who we are, what we do, and how you can help. Please consider donating and sharing this campaign to support our work!

WHO ARE WE AND WHAT DO WE DO?

The Black Box Project is a radical incubator for new works by Black theatre artists throughout the Diaspora, providing a nurturing place for them to hone their craft. Our work focuses on serving those that exist on the margins amongst us. Through culturally specific, dynamic, and engaging programming, we aim to subvert commonly accepted narratives surrounding the Black experience while simultaneously creating a deliberately inclusive space that curates a unique experience that shifts the way Black people from all walks of life engage with theatre.

The Black Box Project operates on an innately anti-capitalist framework; ALL work is valid work, including that which is done by sex workers, immigrants, and all other work that falls outside the imperialistic capitalist sphere. We are committed to centering the stories of Black people that exist on the margins of the margins. Part of this commitment includes accepting work from Black folks from all backgrounds without the requirement of a submission or participation fee.

WHAT DO WE NEED?

Shifting the way Black people engage with theatre is not possible without breaking down economic barriers faced by all involved, backstage, onstage, and in the audience. All funds raised through this effort go towards producing work that amplifies Black voices and cultivates an inclusive space for the Black community. Below is a breakdown of what The Black Box Project can accomplish if the goal of $10,000 is reached.

$3,000: Performer compensation - With this amount, we would be able to hire a maximum of ten (10) performers, paying them $300.00 each
$1000: Piano Accompanist Compensation for rehearsal and performances
$1,000: Rehearsal Space Rental - This would purchase 20 hours at a premium rehearsal space, that includes a piano and suits our acoustic needs
$2,000: Performance Space Rental - This would purchase 2 days of dress rehearsal, as well as two days of performances at a quality theatrical space, with seating for at least 200 audience members
$1,500: Compensate one (1) Lighting Design artist and one (1) Sound Design artist, one (1) stage manager and one (1) production assistant. ($375/per designer)
$1,000: Miscellaneous/Clerical needs, including script and program printing, print and digital marketing, and ticket subsidies for low-income Black audience members.
$200: Audience Talk-Back Facilitator
$300: Food & Drinks for After-Show Party - This is an integral part of our mission, as we cultivate spaces for Black Joy, as well as disrupt what is considered the “mainstream theatrical environment”
