Black Student Union Heritage Tour

Black Student Union is an extracurricular student group that helps to foster affinity, safety, and community for Black students at Envision Academy.
This organization is in its first year, and in our past few meetings, we have had over 40 students in attendance. Our organization has really great momentum in its infancy, and as group facilitators we would like to create a culminating experience for students towards the end of the year. We are planning to take a group of 15 students to Washington D.C. for a black heritage tour.
This will allow students to learn more about the black experience, strengthen their fellowship with one another, and to be connected to an identity that expands across the world.
In DC, students will visit several historically Black sites such as The National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, Howard University, the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site, the Anacostia Community Museum, the Mary Mcleod Bethune House and more.
All across this country, Black students are being failed by educators who do not understand the cultural competencies necessary to teach Black children. As Black educators and black students, this opportunity will push us in our thinking about what it means to be Black and educated, give us multiple representations of that happening, and allow us a common experience to reflect on and take forward into our practice back at school.
Your donation will go towards the following expenses for 15 students on a 5 day, 4 night trip:
- Flight and ground transportation
- Lodging
- Meals
- Museums and Attractions
