Help Black Scenic Artists Join IATSE USA 829
Donation protected
Hi my name is Harri Horsley!
“In September of 2022 United Scenic Artists, IATSE Local 829, released its first-ever demographic survey of its more than 5,000 members nationwide. According to the local, the survey revealed a “strikingly” small “inclusion of members who identify as part of the Black Community 1.9%” (deadline.com). Only 44% of 5,000 members were interviewed for the survey and most were women. This is across all disciplines of design and technical work. I want to get these numbers up.

.
For the fundraiser, I want to distribute these funds across the nation to Black designers I know that should be in the union. This would be the Eastern, Central, and Western regions of the United States. I’m thinking of 6 people that can take the rebate exam and use the $802 (for USA 829 and IATSE fees) to join the union and eventually in the future this can be used for other designers to join.
From the USA 829 website , the Initiation Fee for all Designers, Scenic Artists, Art Department Coordinators and Computer Artists is $3,500. Currently, there is a rebate of $3,000 for anyone admitted through the Exam process, making the actual Initiation Fee $500 for those people. As with the Professional Membership Application, there are additional IATSE dues and fees totaling approximately $302.
Benefits to joining the union:
I ask to donate what you can and share this message to help me reach my goal! Thank y’all so much! If you know any Black artists that have the portfolio and experience to interview and join IATSE 829 please let me know so we can continue this!
With solidarity and love,
Harri
