education. In addition AeroSoul has curated three group art shows bringing together legendary spray can artists from across the US, Europe and Africa. Our work transforms the visual landscape in Oakland California where we are based. AeroSoul’s artists create murals in the HipHop aesthetic that advocate for self-determination in struggling Black and Brown communities. Recently, AeroSoul under the leadership of artist Refa One, has been struggling to stop the intrusion of gentrification on the visual landscape of Oakland by painting murals that acknowledge the Black community in historic West Oakland. AeroSoul completed the only Black self-determined mural dedicated to the grassroots work of the Black Panther party (created in West Oakland) along with three other murals dedicated to Martin Luther King and Harriet Tubman amongst others. With homelessness rampant as a result of gentrification AeroSoul Arts is now focused on creating a mural that both acknowledges the homeless populace and the historical legacy of the Black Panther Party. The Black Panther Party’s ten point program observed the need for decent housing in 1966 by stating in point number four that, “We want decent housing, fit for shelter of human beings.” Over a half-century later those words are truer than ever. We are asking for funds to buy paint and pay artists from Oakland, Los Angeles and West Africa to participate in the creation of a mural at the corner of San Pablo ave. and Castro streets here in Oakland. The ability to call together such a team is made possible by the many years of relationship building and collaborative projects that AeroSoul has created. However, we need to provide transportation payment for the labor of our artists and we are asking for your support in doing so.
