Black Music Movement
The Black Music Protest started several weeks ago, with the aim of changing the narrative around the Black Lives Matter protests by bringing art and music into the conversation.
We provide a platform for young BAME artists to perform music relevant to the movement, invite speakers to come and educate the crowd and make their demands heard, as well as creating an atmosphere of peaceful resistance and maintaining a good relationship with police at all of our events.
Bringing music to these protests has made the difficult conversations around racism in all its forms somewhat easier, as music is such a universal language - we have had incredible feedback and support from across a huge section of the community, who have described our events as incredibly educational, moving and resonant.
Our plans for the future of this movement are to:
1 - Take our artists to different cities in the UK, in order to keep momentum going and reach people who might not have otherwise had the opportunity to empathise with our cause
2 - Record a collaborative album of young BAME Talent, addressing the movement and sharing their experiences to both educate and uplift listeners
3 - Hold Workshops for young musicians from songwriting to performance to production to help them fine tune their skills and grow as artists
4 - Continue to provide a platform to address the urgent need for change and reform in all institutions to eradicate systematic racism
5 - To highlight racism within the music industry in particular and push for reform
We are asking for funds to:
1 - pay for equipment to perform
2 - transport for our artists and equipment
3 - to cover expenses of trips to other cities in the UK(accommodation, food etc)
4 - to pay for studio sessions, music videos and promotion
5 - purchase masks, water and hand sanitiser for our audience members/workshop participants to stay safe
6 - provide safe, socially distanced spaces to run workshops for young musicians
