Black Lives Matter At School Year of Purpose

Black Lives Matter At School is a national coalition organizing for racial justice in education.  The Black Lives Matter at School movement first started in Seattle during the fall of 2016, when thousands of educators in Seattle came to school on October 19th wearing shirts that said, “Black Lives Matter: We Stand Together.” This action attracted national news, helping it spread to Philadelphia, where Racial Justice Organizing Committee expanded the platform for action to extend over an entire week that year with teaching points around the principles espoused by the official Black Lives Matter Global Network. Since then, we’ve amassed local “weeks of action” taking place in hundreds of school districts throughout the United States, including endorsements with the NEA and AFT, the two largest teacher’s unions in the country. See this map from the NEA EdJustice team about our 2021 representation.

These funds will ensure the steering committee has built the necessary framework for the new school year and beyond. We will be working with a consultant to assist us with building a sustainable organizational model that includes the voices of those doing the work throughout the country. The funds will ensure we can pay for the expertise afforded to us. This would be the initial  $2,500.  The other $2,500 would be used to fund the Year of Purpose.

We are dedicated to ongoing accessibility and paying people for their time. All funds raised above that amount will pay for asl, future partners, and organizational framework.
