Angie Grimes Memorial Fund
Hi, my name is Nadiyah Fisher. I am fundraising for my sister Angie Grimes. My mom brought Angie in when she was 14 years old. As a social worker who worked closely with Child Protective Services, my mom wanted to foster children and provide them with a nurturing home environment. Angie did not have her mother present in her life and her father suffered from mental illness. Angie excelled as a new addition to our family. Her bright smile and heart was contagious. Angie was more than an older sister to me; she was like my soulmate. She taught me to live out loud and wear my heart on my sleeve. Her presence in the family was integral in my upbringing. After graduating from Camden High School, she enlisted into the United States Navy. After serving 10 years, Angie suffered from PTSD, anxiety and depression due to the nature of the job and the discrimination she faced by being a Black lesbian woman. After her father died in an automobile accident, Angie's mental health started to spiral. Eventually, she was honorably discharged as a disabled veteran. She was in and out of the hospital and struggled to adjust to life outside of the Navy. On Wednesday, July 28th, after work, I received a call that Angie died unexpectedly at the psychiatric hospital in Virginia. The cause of her death is unknown; my family and I are waiting for autopsy results. I created this GoFundMe to help raise funds for my sister's funeral. If there is any surplus contributions, it will be donated in Angie's memory toward charities supporting homeless veterans who suffered from mental illness because it was my sister's passion to help them.
