Help Black Cat Theatre produce their second show!

UPDATE 2/9/24: thanks to the generosity of our community, we have surpassed our initial goal! We're raising the goal to $1,900 -- these extra donations will raise all six actor stipends and cover the cost of officially becoming a 501c3 with the IRS!

"Lady and Lord’s daughter, Jules, is dead, and someone is going to pay. While attending grief counseling sessions, the parents discover that their counselor, Lawrence, had a hand in Jules’ death. They plot revenge, but off in Mantua, Jules is still alive. Probably. Her happy-ever-after is so unhappy that she’s beginning to wonder if the fake-your-death potion was really poison. Her husband, Ro, can’t stop thinking about the people he killed to get to this honeymoon. Shadows keep seeping out of the walls to haunt both star-crossed couples, and the earth is heating up, and the world is ending, and we’re all gonna die anyways so can love be enough when you aren’t even sure that love exists?”

This is the plot of When She Went to Mantua, a new take on Romeo and Juliet by Chicago-based playwright Natalie Welber – and Black Cat Theatre’s second production! Taking place on April 9th, 2024 at The Edge Off Broadway, this beautiful, dark, funny, and prescient new work will feature six performers tackling text and mastering movement in an intimate playspace– graciously co-produced by Idle Muse Theatre.

As just a little kitten of a theatre company waiting to be given the full green light on our 501c3 status, Black Cat Theatre is turning to its community to help bring When She Went to Mantua to life. Financial transparency is one of our core values here at BCT, so we’re sharing our budget breakdown here:

Total Budget: $1,200
  • $200 for performance night rental and tech rehearsal rental
  • $150 for total rehearsal space rental
  • $650 for actor and tech crew stipends
  • $100 for props/set pieces
  • $100 for marketing material costs

Have a little extra cash to spare this winter? Consider donating to help fund an up-and-coming Chicago storefront theatre!
  • Donations of $50 or more get a pre-reserved ticket for the show and name in our program as a Black Cat sponsor
  • Anything raised over $1200 goes to further compensating the Mantua artists and to building BCT future productions
  • …including our goal to fully realize When She Went to Mantua for a full run! We can’t do that until the IRS recognizes us as a 501(c)(3) non profit – and we certainly can’t do it without your help!

Thank you so much for your generosity, and we can't wait to cross paths with our community members at this production in April.
