Hi! My name is Matt Behringer, and in 2019 I took a leap and started a company to one day sell lacto-fermented hot sauce in the DC Metro area. That dream is alive now more than ever, but I need some help getting off the ground, and over the first hurdle to get this sauce on the market.
I'll discuss more about the plan later, but first:
The Story So Far

The last year has been one of growth, passion, and new found purpose. After years of failing health, both mentally and physically, led me to psychiatric hospitalization, I needed a way back into the world - a way to rebuild and thrive instead of just surviving. I turned to my passion for food, and spent my free time cooking along with YouTube food personalities.
On a whim, I decided to give fermentation a try, starting with kombucha and working my way up. An experiment with fermented hot sauce wound up to be mind-blowingly good, and I set out to refine my recipe and perfect it, consumed with new ideas every day. I tested my new product out on friends, family, and coworkers, and consistently came back with the same response - "Matt, you gotta sell this stuff!"
Later in the year, with 10 different hot sauce flavors under my belt, I realized that this had potential. I could use sauce to make a difference, to support charities and nonprofits to help those in danger like I was years ago.
Because I fell through all the cracks of our mental health system. And any method I can use to keep someone else from that danger is a tool I have to use.
I crafted the idea of forming a company. Behringer Pepper Company was born - at least spiritually - with the goal to donate at least 20% of all company profits to support LGBT equality, assault prevention/survivors, mental health outreach, and suicide prevention.
In the last months the company has taken several steps toward the final goal of full sale, but there is still much that needs to be done. Your donation will help fund the final steps to make this dream a reality.
What will the money be paying for?
- Bottling/Pasteurizing certification
Proper certification to bottle acidified product.
- Trademarking
Gotta protect the logo!
- Food safety and shelf life tests
To determine whether the production method is 100% shelf ready, or if I need to switch from wild to cultured fermentation beforehand.
- Security deposit for a secured credit line
Behringer Pepper Company has quickly grown in a relatively short time from just a hobby into a work of passion, and I can't wait to share a final product with the world. The goal is to start sale in the DC metro area, then Richmond, Baltimore, and then the world!
At the moment I cannot offer incentives to donation, as I don't have the capital to produce, but I will find a way to show each and every person who donates just how much their support means.
