Hello, my name is Laura Peggs, and I’m asking for your support to help me make my home safe, comfortable, and truly liveable.
I’m a full-time wheelchair user and Chair of FLAG Charity in Bedford, a local charity supporting disabled people and carers. I’m passionate about championing the rights of disabled people and giving back to my community. But right now, I’m struggling to manage even the basics in my own home.
With your help, I can fix this – and keep moving forward with my life and my work for others.
My story
When I was 10 years old, I was diagnosed with a brain tumour. After a 7.5-hour operation, I lost the sight in one eye, the use of the right side of my body, and eventually the ability to walk. I’ve lived with chronic pain ever since.
In 2022, a fall meant I could no longer walk at all, and I now rely completely on my wheelchair – or as I call it, my chariot. I’ve learned to embrace life as it is, but to do that, my home urgently needs adapting.
Why I need your help
I live in a bungalow, but it’s far from safe or suitable. My independence is limited by things that could be fixed with your support.
My immediate essentials are:
- Specialist safety flooring – £3,600 (my current floors are badly damaged by my wheelchair, making everyday life unsafe).
- Specially adapted chair (The Admiral Lateral) – £2,000 (this will help with my scoliosis and prevent the strain that comes from sitting in my wheelchair all day. The removable arm also makes transferring much safer).
- Basic decorating and wall protection – to stop my wheelchair damaging corners and doorframes.
- Shelving & storage – to get my belongings and craft supplies off the floor and to a reachable level.
- Garden repair – £50 (to stop my retired greyhound, John, from digging craters big enough to reach Australia!).
These may sound simple, but for me, they are life-changing.

My bigger plan
I’m not someone who sits back and waits for things to happen. I’ve already planned fundraising events of my own, including:
- A garden party craft sale in September
- A stall at the John Bunyan Centre in October
- FLAG’s 25th anniversary celebrations later this year
Your support will give me the solid base I need to focus on these events, and on helping others. With a safe, adapted home, I can spend more time supporting FLAG, raising awareness for disability rights, and running creative workshops that bring people together.
