We delivered our first batch to a Chicago hospital on March 28th!
Our current stock of 3D printers can produce 50 face shields per day. We are aiming to double our production to 100 shields per day with four more 3D printers. We are also working on gathering more materials. Materials needed to create each shield cost only 75 cents. For every $100 donated, bKL can make an additional 75 shields! For every $500 donated, that’s the equivalent of 1/8 of another 3D printer.
If you are able, please consider donating any amount to assist us with this effort. All contributions will be used for additional printers and materials.
All 3D printers purchased using contribution funds will be donated to bKL's clients Chicago Public Schools and Chicago Public Library once the COVID-19 crisis has passed and/or PPE is more accessible.
May 1st | Final Update:
· 5,000 face shields delivered as of April 30th
· 53 hospitals, clinics, aging homes, and community organizations served
· 12 states reached with shields shipped
· 298 donors contributed
· 100 plus bKL’ers and friends volunteered
· 0 days off for bKL’s Andrew over the last month. Thank you Andrew!
We would also like to thank the Chicago Dept. of Public Health, Cook County Dept. of Emergency Management, and GetMePPE Chicago for assisting us with shield distribution.
Commercial makers of face shields have caught up to us and can produce shields in much bigger quantities (thankfully!) Our shields are still in demand and we will continue to produce reserve amounts to meet additional requests.
We are proud to have filled early needs with our DIY effort, and we thank you all for your amazing support. We will be sending 8 relatively new 3D printers to CPS and CPL soon. The small amount of unused monies will be donated to GetMePPE Chicago.
Above all, we owe a huge debt of gratitude to the healthcare professionals, first responders and community organizers on the front lines – they are the heroes of our time.
Thank you all, please be well, and let’s hope we get past this terrible crisis soon.
