My name is Kimberly, and I recently moved to Kamloops, a city that has quickly become my second home. The warmth and kindness of the people here is truly remarkable, and it reminds me so much of the generous, resilient spirit of Jamaicans everywhere. It is this shared heart, between Kamloops and Jamaica, that gives me hope even in the midst of heartbreak.

On October 28, Hurricane Melissa, a devastating Category 5 storm, made landfall in East Westmoreland on the western end of Jamaica, close to my grandparents’ and aunts’ homes. The destruction was widespread. Homes and communities were flattened, lives were lost, and one of the world’s most beloved tourist destinations is now almost unrecognizable. My heart aches for my country, for the people, the land, and the spirit of Jamaica.

Many of my family members, friends, and neighbours in the West are now without homes or basic necessities. Being far away while they suffer fills me with guilt and helplessness, and I know I am not alone. Many Jamaicans living here in Kamloops share the same heartbreak, and we are determined to do what we can to help and bring hope back to our people.

We are coming together as a community to raise support for those affected. All funds raised through this campaign will go directly toward buying food, essential items, and materials to help rebuild homes and communities. These resources will be sent directly to families and communities in need in Jamaica.
