He'll always be Kyle to me, but many of you might know him as Ben, BK, or Ben Kyle. If you've ever had the privilege of meeting Kyle, one thing I can guarantee is that he will leave an indelible mark on your heart. Not because he stands tall at 6'7", but because he embodies qualities of generosity, kindness, and compassion that are truly exceptional. And now, he's the one who needs our help.
On August 8th, 2023, Kyle was admitted to Tampa General Hospital, and a week later, he received a diagnosis that no one should have to face – Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
My connection with Kyle goes back to the 90s when my family first started attending church in Tampa. Over the years, I became close to him and eventually married his little sister in 2009. Throughout all the seasons of life, Kyle has remained a beacon of positivity, even during the toughest times. As men, we often try to shoulder our burdens alone, but there are moments when we must reach out for support. Kyle has bravely chosen to share his journey with all of us.
The COVID-19 pandemic brought hardships to many, especially those in the culinary industry. Kyle lost his job and, eventually, his apartment. Like countless Americans, he believed this would be a short-term setback. However, the cost of securing a new place and catching up on bills proved insurmountable.
For over a year, Kyle endured in silence, living out of his car, using the gym for showers, and piecing together odd jobs to make ends meet. Determined to rise above his circumstances, in 2023, he secured a job in a corporate kitchen with health benefits. I couldn't be prouder of my friend and brother-in-law for reaching out and asking for help.
With the support of friends and family, Kyle found a roommate, furnished his new living space, and began building a path toward a brighter future. However, the toll of living in his car had taken a toll on his health. He required two surgeries to address blood flow issues in his legs. Fortunately, he now has health insurance, but the medical expenses remain substantial.
Kyle's latest diagnosis of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma has brought a new set of challenges. As a corporate chef, he simply cannot afford the mounting medical bills, the time off required for treatment, and the need to prioritize his health. The initial hospital bills for his stay have already exceeded $2,000. While we've set a fundraising goal of $45,000, we hope to surpass it, ensuring that Kyle can focus solely on his battle for life.
Ben Kyle does have health insurance, but as many Americans know, the out-of-pocket expenses associated with serious illnesses can be overwhelming. We are humbly asking for your help and donations so that BK can concentrate on his health without the added burden of financial worries, and to continue spreading joy in this world.
