Is there anything more precious than a child’s life? Is that a question that even needs to be asked, or answered out loud for that matter? Our neighbor, Aleah Shalan, will turn 8 years old on December 30th. She has not been to school this year, she has not laughed or played or even slept in her own house for months! Instead she spent her summer in and out of Duke Hospital hoping the doctors there could help her.
This summer Aleah started having seizures. No clues or other side effects manifested. Just seizures. They were infrequent at first and did not last long, but as the days of summer passed they came more often and lasted longer. In October she was admitted to Duke ICU and put in a medically induced coma. The seizures were relentless and there was no other way to keep her safe. The medical team was stumped. They tried medication after medication and did test after test, but nothing was helping and no tests were providing positive answers.
Just 2 days before Thanksgiving Aleah went for her 2nd brain surgery. SECOND. No human should have to have one brain surgery, but this was her second. The surgery was to determine, if by removing a small portion of her brain, they could slow the seizures. At this point her parents, Sam and Nicole, were past wanting the seizures to stop. They were simply hoping and praying the seizures would slow down, become less frequent, so that hopefully medication could control them. But, their broken hearts would remain shattered because the surgery did not help.
It is now November 29th 2016, just 26 days before Christmas and 31 days before Aleah’s 8th birthday, and Aleah will go for surgery today. The doctors will remove the affected area of her brain. They have told her parents that the entire right side of her body will feel and act like someone who has had a stroke. Her arms and legs, face, speech, and eyesight…..all effected. After surgery they will transfer Aleah to Charlotte where she will be admitted to a rehab hospital. There they will work with Aleah to teach her brain to perform all of the functions it did prior to surgery.
Our hearts are that you would reach out to Sam, Nicole, Sammy, Tamam, & Noah in prayer and with monetary donations to help them through this extremely difficult time in their lives. Sam, the father, has been unable to work since July, when he left his job to be with his precious daughter Aleah and the rest of his family. Finances are null, stress is high, hearts are heavy and the medical bills don’t seem to stop coming. The family needs help with not just Aleah’s medical bills and gas, but also to buy groceries and simply pay their electric bill.
Will you please consider reaching beyond yourself and blessing this family? NO AMOUNT of money is too small and NO prayer is too short. From what I, Jenny, believe, prayer moves the hand of God, and causes seed to be multiplied. Please plant a seed that can be multiplied.
Love,
Melisa & Jenny
