Hi friends and family,
We hope this message finds you well and in good spirits as we approach the holiday season. We wanted to share an update about our daughter, Aaliyah, and the challenges we’ve been facing since June 8, 2025.
Aaliyah has been experiencing episodes where her legs become temporarily paralyzed, often triggered by headaches and dizziness. These episodes can last anywhere from 6 to 8 hours, and they have been incredibly concerning for us. After an initial visit to the Emergency Room in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, where they performed a lumbar puncture, we were referred to the pediatric wing at East Carolina University Health Medical Center in Greenville, North Carolina. There, Dr. Bell and his team suspected dehydration and low blood sugar levels, which we have since managed to stabilize.
Following further consultations with a child neurologist, Aaliyah underwent two MRIs, an EMG, and lab tests. Thankfully, the brain MRI returned normal; however, the spine MRI indicated a reversal of cervical lordosis. Although her EMG results were normal, she has unfortunately begun to experience additional symptoms, including seizures and difficulties with mobility and speech. This has required us to provide her with round-the-clock care.
In October, we consulted with Dr. Helseth in Charlotte, who diagnosed Aaliyah with Functional Neurological Disorder. This diagnosis has helped us understand the range of symptoms she is facing. Dr. Helseth has recommended that Aaliyah transition to virtual learning, as her condition has made it unsafe for her to attend school in person.
We recently connected with a doctor in California who specializes in intensive therapy for her condition. He believes that a week of focused treatment could significantly help Aaliyah regain her muscle strength. We are planning to travel to California in the third week of January 2026, but unfortunately, my husband’s health insurance does not cover this therapy, and we have faced challenges with work commitments due to Aaliyah’s needs.
To help with the financial burden, we have started a GoFundMe page. We would be incredibly grateful for any support, whether it’s sharing our story or contributing to our goal. Your kindness and generosity mean the world to us as we navigate this journey.
Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Thank you for your continued love and support.
