Two days after finding out the sex of their baby, Misty received a call from the doctor who informed them that their baby boy has Spina Bifida, a birth defect of the spine. The following week on July 8th, Misty and Luis took the 150 mile ride to Appleton, Wisconsin (from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan) for further testing in determining the severity of the Spina Bifida. Baby Delagarza was diagnosed with the most severe form, Myelomeningocele. Some complications with this defect include hydrocephalus, or fluid buildup on the brain, bowel and bladder control issues, and difficulty walking. Upon returning from Appleton, Misty had yet to turn around and travel back to Appleton for an amniocentesis to rule out any other abnormalities with the baby before being referred.
Being from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, there are no Specialists or Children Hospitals. Misty and Luis will need to travel to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, PA for more testing to see if Misty is a candidate for the in-utero surgery to repair the defect in Baby Delagarza’s lower back to prevent any further nerve damage to his spinal cord.
During this time, Misty, who works 2 jobs and Luis, who is a Carpenter within the Union, both have to take time away from their jobs to travel hundreds of miles to ensure that their baby boy will get the best care possible. If Misty is eligible for the surgery, she will be laid up for at least 3 weeks. There is also the possibility of going into early labor in which Misty will need to be air lifted to Milwaukee to prevent delivery and to undergo a caesarian section. Although insurance will cover some of the testing and surgery, it won’t however, cover traveling expenses’, care for their 5 year old daughter, bills or after care of their baby boy.
Any prayers, support and donations would be greatly appreciated by Misty, Luis, Abby and Baby Delagarza.
Thank you all in advance and will keep you updated.
