My Grandmother used to tell me, “Getting Older is Not for Sissy’s.” Standing quietly at the age of 10, I wondered what on earth she was talking about. As I approach completing my 69th year (the 16th) around the sun, I have a much better understanding of her words. I wonder if every person has a specific year that the sobering fact hits them. I have lived more days than I have left. I would not complain about all the years lived. While I have had many challenges, I have many blessings. Absolutely no regrets! The only outstanding gripe I have is this spine, but I understand there are no trade-ins.

This May, this little rescue celebrates 20 years of service to the community! We have helped over 850 mares and foals. The amazing family of volunteers makes the magic happen. Denna, Cindie, Our White Witch Kim, Phyllis, Margaret, Debra, Robert, Omar, and countless others volunteer their precious time and often funds to make a difference in these lives. My Gratitude is immeasurable.

This last image is extremely special to me. I was hosting an event when a woman approached me and took my hand. She placed a teacup and shared, “When I came to America, this is all I could bring. Everything else was left behind. I want this to help the horses, please take it.” I’m pretty sure I stood there with my mouth open, speechless. I muttered a thank you.

As the months and years roll by, our coffers sometimes run low. I step up to pay the bills, but not without glancing at that teacup. Sitting upon my cupboard in plain view, I quietly say thank you. A lesson in generosity well learned. A timeless little beacon of hope and perseverance.
