Birdies Fore Bo - Brain Cancer Survivor

Donation protected
Thursday, August 29th, 2019 changed our family's life forever.
It was the scariest and most joy filled day of our lives. That's the day that our dad, mentor, coach, and role model, Bo Bowden, underwent a successful brain surgery. Many of you know our dad, Bo, as the tall, jovial, red-headed golf pro who can't wait to help you start enjoying the game more. We've had the pleasure of watching first hand as Dad has given of his time and talent as a Class A PGA Professional to put smiles on so many faces across the Southeast. If you know Bo and have fond memories of the time you spent with him or just want to help our family during this challenging time, please consider giving to the #BirdiesForeBo Campaign. Please give as you feel led. God Bless!

#BirdiesForeBo Campaign
Since we are both college golf coaches (thanks to our Dad) we would like to challenge you to consider matching or exceeding our commitment to donating $1 for every birdie and $5 for every eagle our players make this Fall season during competition. Upon the completion of each event, Coach Daniel will be donating based on the UNCW Men's Golf Team's birdie and eagle count and Coach Jonathan will be donating based on the UNCW Women's Golf Team's count. Our season is currently on hold due to Hurricane Dorian but we are scheduled to begin competition by the end of September. Our Men's and Women's Golf Teams plan to compete in four events this Fall from September to the first week in November. You can stay up to date with the players' birdie count on social media (Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter) using the hashtag #BirdiesForeBo and we will be posting the results here after each event! "Wherever you are, be all there!"
Never in a million years did we think we would end up here, but as Mr. Jim Elliot once said - "Wherever you are, be all there!" - so here we are and we're ready to fight. But, we need your help. Our goal is to raise awareness for the approx. 1 in 143 men and 1 in 185 women who are affected by brain cancer during their lifetime, while also raising as much money as we can to help our parents with the high costs associated with dad's brain surgery. Our hope is that we can help our parents ease the financial burden that is cancer so Dad can relax and focus on his recovery. At just 62 years young, we know Dad has many more lives to touch in the coming months and years.

How Did We Get Here?
On January 1, 2017 after months of chemo and radiation for squamous cell carcinoma our dad was pronounced cancer free. What a day. It's been 32 months and unfortunately the battle isn't over, it's just beginning, again. First, it was a sore throat that ended up being squamous cell carcinoma in his tonsils. Then, over a year later, a mass was found in his lungs and removed, now this - Brain Cancer. The words no one believes they will ever hear in the same sentence as their family member's name - much less their dad's. Dad's cancer was discovered after he began experiencing substantial vision loss in his right eye. A casual visit to the optometrist to get glasses led to an immediate appointment with the ophthalmologist. Upon the completion of an MRI, doctors discovered a mass on the rear left portion of his brain. Doctors recommended the golf ball-sized tumor on dad's occipital lobe be removed immediately and we followed their recommendation. Surgery was an overwhelming success and the prognosis sounds bright. Dad returned home on Tuesday, September 3rd and has embarked on the road to recovery which will most likely include a few additional treatments.

What's Next?
Dad is currently recovering at home and we continue to pray each day his strength and clarity of mind will continue to improve. Dad's upcoming treatment will take place at Prisma Health in Greenville, SC (formerly Greenville Memorial Hospital) where he had his surgery successfully completed. We look forward to keeping you up to date on Dad's progress and the success of our teams this Fall!
