Biogas Toilets for well recipients in Uganda
Donation protected
We are now in Phase Two of the WASH Project. It has been just over one year since you helped us install a fresh water well for the village of Namsaala. If you remember, their only source for water was a watering hole shared with the animals and they were experiencing a drought, so their only surface water source was drying up. Since receiving the well the incidence of illness has gone down, and a community of over 300 people have access to deep clean well water.
Water alone is not enough to improve health and provide dignity. Hygiene facilities (toilets) are essential to the long-term success of this project. When we asked the village leaders what was holding them back their answer was unanimous: sanitation facilities which will also produce methane gas for cooking. Toilets will not only improve health conditions but will also bring dignity to this community! In this phase we will build one community toilet strategically located close to two schools as well as the market location for the village. We have the full support of the local authorities.
The benefit of these facilities will be multi-faceted. They will increase sanitation, reduce disease and increase dignity. The methane gas produced will benefit girls greatly. Currently, girls are responsible to collect wood for the fires they cook on. They spend hours collecting wood and are often vulnerable to attacks of all kinds. With cooking gas, the girls will be able to attend school more regularly, will be less vulnerable to attack and the local ministry leaders feel that this gas will even reduce teenage pregnancy!
The facility, including five toilets and five bio gas digesters, will cost approximately $40,000. As soon as we reach $7,000 we will begin construction on the first unit. Your donation can change lives now and for generations to come. The vision for this project is much bigger but we are beginning with this small step forward and headed towards a self-sustaining program that will empower these people to farm, earn, learn and thrive for this and following generations.
