Billy's College Tuition (Morehouse Fall 2020)

Ever since I was in middle school, I had dreams of attending an HBCU (Historically Black College & University), specifically Morehouse College, an HBCU in Atlanta, Georgia. Now, after graduating with an AA-T (Associate in Arts for Transfer) in English, at the age of twenty-one, I have that opportunity to do so; the access to matriculate through an HBCU I dreamed of attending since 7th grade. This was a result of being a product of Black and Brown love, growing up in Southern California, in a predominantly Hispanic community and attending a charter school with a duel-immersion program in Spanish, which later led me to earning a Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish after graduating from High School. Through loved ones and family members, I was able to learn and marinate, in what partially made me up, ethnically. Through my father, he brought into my vision, the works of Black artists and activist, such as Spike Lee and Malcolm X. Thirdly, the grueling state that came with the repetitive curriculum in Northern American (Eurocentric) history, led my interest of wanting to attend an HBCU, Morehouse College. Taking what I’ll learn from this intellectual and spiritual experience, from revelations to personal growth that I will garner, I want to bring these findings back to the community who raised me to be the individual that I am, today. As someone who is interested and has a passion to help those in need, especially for those that I see myself in, I want to take my upper-academic experiences, as an English major, to education and provide students, who look like me, with the potential to self-actualize, through a redefined lens. One of artistic, humanistic, and holistic pedagogy. As I cross into the next threshold of my upper academia, accompany me into this new endeavor and be a part of fulfilling my dream.
