My friend Billy Thompson has endured more pain and grief in the last year than anyone should have to bear. Billy was diagnosed with Diabetic Gastroparesis, a rare stomach disorder that prevents him from properly digesting food. After many tests and lengthy stays in and out of hospitals, he will undergo surgery tomorrow to have a device implanted in his stomach to help him digest food.
Back in the day, all of us kids from the ‘Dena had a bit of a wild side. We built Busch Mountains together down Forest Glen Drive, played drinking games on weekend nights when parents were away, partied in open fields, tussled at lacrosse and football games and stumbled into the “Hole” with Irishman and other yard ornaments. Billy is the only person I know who drove himself to Bayview Middle and CHS! Billy lost his biggest supporter and one of my favorite people when his mom passed away New Year's Eve. With that said, he is my friend, my brother, and as resistant as he is with asking for help, I am.
He has been unable to work a regular schedule in months, endured the loss of his mother and funeral expenses and will undergo major surgery and additional health costs in the week s to come. He will also be out of work while recovering from surgery and has been denied disability by the State of Maryland. A small donation from friends that he may have helped over the years, maybe bought a drink, given a ride or just lent a helping hand. No amount is too small; a little help from friends can go a long way during this difficult time. Please help if you are able, he would do the same for you under the circumstances.
