On Sunday, January 20th our families world was flipped upside down. Billy had been having stomach aches for a year, but the multiple times he went to a doctor he was told it was gas and his diet. On this night he woke me up at 1:30 am and he was in a cold sweat and about to pass out. We were off to the ER.
When we got there they decided to do a CT scan of his belly to see what was going on. The doctor came back into the room and said words no one wants to hear. “We need to talk. This isn’t good.”
He explained that he had a tennis ball sized tumor that was almost creating a complete blockage of his digestive system. We needed to stay and have emergency surgery or there was a possibility of a rupture.
While Billy was in surgery that day, they let me know in the middle that there was a complication. They were calling in specialists to take a look. An hour and a half later they call and tell me the tumor was bigger than they expected and not only to do they have to take out the part of the colon, but they also have to take out part of the small intestine.
Due to the sensitive area that they had to remove from the small intestine, Billy has been hooked up to multiple tubes and has only been allowed a few ice chips an hour. The next few days were spent trying to keep him calm, while not being allowed to eat and waiting for pathology results to come back to see the stage of cancer and if it had spread.
Slowly the tests were coming back showing there was no spread of the disease. Then the final pathology came back on his stomach. Due to the size of the tumor and the fact it had been touching other organs in his body, they needed to go back in immediately to remove the rest of the cancer.
Tomorrow he goes in for a Whipple procedure. A Whipple procedure is a complex operation to remove the head of the pancreas, the first part of the small intestine (duodenum), the gallbladder and the bile duct. The is major surgery on its own, never mind the fact he just had major surgery four days ago.
I am not fully sure the extent of the bills to come, nor do I care about that right now, but I do know we need help. So many people have reached out and asked where they can donate. There will be a fundraiser at Big Deluxe Tattoo and Regal Barbershop locally in Salt Lake City. You can check both of their social pages for more info if you would like to attend. For those who can’t attend, I have set up this page.
He is a fighter. He is mentally stronger than anyone I know. He is going to get through this and heal. Thank you for the outpouring of support that we have received from friends and family across the United States. We love you and can’t wait for the day in the future when we can announce he is cancer free.
- Sincerely The Murphy family + Me (Amanda)...the soon to be member of the Murphy family!
