Billy Cameron Recovery Fund

My name is Meagan Cameron and I’m fundraising for my brother Billy Cameron from Glace Bay, on Cape Breton Island.

Billy is a smart, funny and athletic 16-year-old. He is a straight-A student and his life has centred around his friends and being a defenceman for the Cape Breton Hockey League and Glace Bay Minor Hockey. Billy just turned 16 and he was studying to get his driver’s licence and applying for summer jobs.

Last week Billy’s life completely changed when he went for a walk along the coastline by our house in Glace Bay. The edge of a cliff eroded and he fell about 40 feet. He was alone and awake for about 6 hours. The tide was starting to come in and, by some miracle, a woman heard him calling for help.

The fall was devastating. He has a fractured spine and broken feet. Since he’s been in the hospital, he has had a blood clot in his lungs and we’re taking it one day at a time. He has some sensation in his legs and feet, so we’re optimistic he’ll be able to walk again but the doctors say it’s still too soon to know how likely this is.

Since the accident, our mother, Judy Cameron, has been in Halifax and hasn’t left his side. The doctors expect he’ll be in the Halifax hospital for several months.

The community has been so amazing reaching out to ask how they can help. The Miners Museum Village Restaurant organized a fundraising draw and the hockey community has come together to organize 50:50 ticket sales.

All money raised will be spent to help our mother stay with him in Halifax while he’s in the hospital, make any living accommodations he’ll need (like a wheelchair ramp), and the extensive physical therapy he’ll need when he’s back home.
