Hello, I am Bill’s son, Justin. I’m writing today while my father is in the hospital for the 4th time this year fighting for his life. Bill has been struggling with his health for as long as I can remember. However, he has deteriorated to the point he needs nursing care. He was prescribed prednisone for 20 years for asthma before they understood how detrimental the long-term side effects are. As a result, his digestive system is ruined, making him chronically malnutritional and severely underweight. The medication ate away his bones causing him to have osteoporosis. None of which stopped him from fighting to regain his health. However, the last straw fell 5 years ago, Bill was diagnosed with COPD, and thing has been downhill since. He now relies on an oxygen machine to breathe. Most days he’s too weak to walk or stand, let alone trying to bathe himself. Everything he eats hurts his stomach. Despite his efforts to gain weight, he’s now barely 110 lbs (50kg). Bill has been hospitalized 4 times this year for pneumonia. 2 of which he had to be intubated to prevent respiratory failure.

Bill has been a great father to me. 20 years ago, when my parents separated, he moved to a new country just to be a part of my upbringing. He is a great friend to many. He is kind in nature and will give the shirt off his back to a friend in need. As his only son, it’s painful for me unable to shoulder the mounting cost of his care and the frequent hospitalizations. My goal now is for him to live out his days as comfortably as possible and not have to worry about finance.
