My name is Jay Sabicer, and I'm in trouble. I've been working at a part-time job for almost 2 years, planning to gain opportunities within a company that was planning to expand, and in effect expand my position and salary. Unfortunately, the expansion has taken far longer than either I or my employer have expected.
The meager earnings of a minimum-wage job, averaging about 25 hours a week for these 2 years required me to seek additional labor on the side. The extra hustling of doing freelance projects as a graphic artist was fairly consistent, making me able to pay those bills on time, only occasionally allowing me to be a month late on a single utility bill (which was usually electricity in the summer months). In the past 4 months, these side hustle jobs have dried up, forcing me to become more and more delinquent.
I am currently looking for either a second part-time job or a full-time position at a better rate of pay, but I'm unable to find an employer that will hire me in an immediate timeframe or within my physical limitations as a person over 55. I possess computer skills, but I've found that the jobs offered are being quickly phased out by artificial intelligence programs. Ridesharing is no longer an option since the costs of gasoline and car upkeep far outweigh any profits I may be taking in. Delivery services are currently not taking new drivers in my area. I continue to get rejection notices from companies that were hiring, which I can only assume that I have 'aged' out of what they are looking for, regarding talent.
I currently live at my late brother's home (he passed in 2018). It's a large house and instead of rent, I am in charge of paying the utilities that the entire household uses (including but not limited to electricity, internet/phone/cable, water/waste collection and pest control). The power and internet bills are by far the largest, varying between $300-800 a month. It's important to me to contribute this amount to fulfill my commitment as a matter of gratitude to my late brother and his wife's charity, to a person who could not possibly afford to live in Southern California by himself.
Any amount that the outside world can manage will be deeply appreciated and used to keep the water and power flowing, and the internet connecting with everyone.
