Fighting for a Smile After Sjögren’s and Lupus
Donation protected
Hello,
My name is Billie. I live in Florida with my wonderful husband and son. I’m reaching out for help today because I’m facing a battle that’s deeply affecting my health and quality of life.
I am disabled due to Lupus and a lesser-known autoimmune disease called Sjögren’s Syndrome. While many are familiar with Lupus, few realize the devastating effects Sjögren’s can have—especially on dental health.
What is Sjögren’s Syndrome?
According to the Mayo Clinic, “Sjogren’s (SHOW-grins) syndrome is a disorder of your immune system identified by its two most common symptoms—dry eyes and dry mouth. The condition often accompanies other immune system disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. In Sjögren’s syndrome, the mucous membranes and moisture-secreting glands of your eyes and mouth are usually affected first—resulting in decreased tears and saliva.”
Because of Sjögren’s, my teeth have been destroyed. And I’m not even 50 yet.
The best treatment plan to restore my health and quality of life is to receive zirconia dental implants. Unfortunately, traditional dentures are not an option for me: severe dry mouth caused by Sjögren’s would make dentures extremely uncomfortable, ill-fitting, and painful. After multiple consultations with prosthodontists, every specialist agreed—implants are my best and only path forward. And of course they cost between $50,000-$60,000. But I did find an organization that helps those that are disabled, like myself and have been quoted $25,000.
Here’s where I need your help.
The cost of these implants is overwhelming, and insurance—including Medicare—will not cover it. Despite advocacy from organizations like the Sjögren’s Foundation, Medicare recently decided not to cover restorative dental care for Sjögren’s patients—a heartbreaking blow for many of us. (And trust me, this is a fight I won’t give up!)
I promise full transparency: 100% of donations will go directly to my dental care provider. I will share my full treatment plan and cost breakdown with all donors.
Your support—whether a donation or simply sharing my story—means the world to me. Any amount helps. More than anything, I dream of being able to smile, eat, and live without daily pain again.
All funds will go directly to my dentist. Once I have 50% of the total cost, he will begin the treatment.
Thank you for reading my story and considering a gift of hope.
With gratitude,
Billie
