Dear Friends of Bill (Pieniaszek):
Bill was struck by a car as he was crossing the street early Tuesday morning. He was severely injured, with a fractured vertebrae, a broken left leg, possible broken right ankle, bruised spleen and a subdural hematoma to the brain; not to mention road rash and stitches all over. He is lucky to have survived the initial accident!
He is receiving the best care possible at Long Beach Memorial and is making great strides. In fact, his back surgery went very well. The spinal cord was only bruised, not damaged. He's facing at least one more surgery for his left leg, and will be in a body cast as well as one (possibly two) leg cast(s). He'll be in the hospital for approx. two weeks, and will need to wear the body cast for around two months.
Bill has a relatively new job, which means he isn't covered by FMLA. They've been kind enough to grant him personal leave for a period of time (to be determined.) He is eager to get back to work as soon as possible, but only time will tell.
For now, Bill still has bills to pay and a mortgage. We'll be signing him up for disability, but that takes time.
To make matters more interesting, we're having a difficult time getting his car out of impound since Bill is stuck in the hospital. (He was crossing the street to get to his car, and it was towed after the accident.) We're working on that as fast as we can, but it'll cost a goodly sum to get it out.
