Stranger, acquaintance, friend, family, father, almost ten years ago my dad, Bill, was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. It was 2008, my sister was in ninth grade and I was in fifth grade. It was hard to see such a strong man come down with something so devastating. My father made it a point to everyone that this disease wasn’t going to beat him. He started out with a full head of steam, he was doing just what he had told people that he was going to do. Over the years his walking slowly declined along with some of his motor skills and depth perception. He started out walking with only assistance, then he progressed to a cane, months had come and gone and he started using a walker in the house and Rascal Scooter to get around outside. His disabilities never stopped him from making it to any of the sporting events, ceremonies or gatherings that my sister and myself were involved in. It was about four years after his diagnoses that my dad ended up getting let go from his job because he wasn’t capable of doing what it took anymore. My father is probably one of the most generous people I know, (contrary to popular belief) he also has one of the biggest hearts that I know of. Even on a fixed income he has always found a way to provide for the people he truly cares about and even some people he doesn’t even know. My dad is always the first person that wants to help someone. It’s so weird to me though because all I have ever experienced my whole life was my dad helping people but he never liked anything in return. He told me one day “as soon as you think you have it bad, you should open up your eyes, son.”
This past August, my father took a pretty good fall and had to be admitted into a rehabilitation center. One day I was up visiting my him and I was pulled aside by one of his case workers. She told me that things were going to be much different from this point on. Of course, she wasn’t telling me anything that I really didn’t already know except coming from her made it really hit home for me. There was so much that I really hadn’t thought of. While my dads’ time was spent at the rehabilitation center, he had another exacerbation of his disease this time taking almost all of his lower body function with it. My instant thought was how are we going to keep this man in his house, he built the thing himself? My Family and I put our heads together and we knew that he was happy in his house and that we needed to keep him there as long as possible.
We use a piece of machinery that we have purchased to allow him to be transported from room to room, along with new wood floors on the main level of the house to allow the machinery that we use to glide effectively. My dad now has a bedroom on the main level of the house because the upstairs isn’t accessible to him anymore. While the main floor isn’t too much better we are trying to work with what we have. Unfortunately, we just are running out of the funds to do any further renovations to the main floor.
We, the Allard Family, are reaching out to anyone out there who would like to help improve the living conditions for my father. Our goal, is to raise enough money to renovate the bathroom on the main floor of the house to be 100% handicap accessible. My goal is to finally have my dad be able to take a shower again because he has been limited to only sponge baths. The money we are trying to raise is going to go further than that I hope. We have looked into at home care for my father to take a little bit of the pressure off of my grandfather who is 83 and my sister and myself. My sister, Kylie lives in Jackson and I attend Central Michigan University. I come home every weekend to help as much as I can and take some of the back ache off of my grandpa. Furthermore, the donations that we would receive would also go towards traveling and staying expenses to the Cleveland Clinic where my dad goes to the doctors. Above all, the money we are trying to raise will go towards any and all copays for the procedures and medications that he may receive. Our goal number is 10,000 dollars. This would allow us to put everything into action and help improve the quality of life for my dad.
I Dylan Allard am asking you personally for any donations, prayers or good vibes for my father. I have never seen my dad take any help from anyone, he has always told me it just isn’t in his nature. This man is truly amazing with everything that he has done for me, my sister, family, friends and our country. I am just asking YOU for a little help at this time. Anything will be taken with the highest gratification and put towards improving the quality of life on a day to day basis. No matter how bad it gets, no matter the struggle, insurmountable hurdles and winding, twisting corners we will keep fighting alongside of my dad. I won’t give up on him, we won’t give up on him, we ask that you join us. Please help me let my dad know we believe in him as much as he has believed in anything and anyone he has ever helped. Stranger, acquaintance, friend, family, father and to me warrior.
