Raising Awareness and Funds
Up until November of 2020, I had no idea what a Hospice was. I thought it was another form of long-term care- and honestly, I was apprehensive when Palliative Care nurse suggested that my mother, the late Barbara Hyslop, be taken into Hospice to spend her final days. My concerns were gone as soon as Mom was wheeled into Hospice Halifax and we were introduced to the talented and gracious staff, shown her private room where she was immediately given the care she required.
Family and friends were able to visit and spend quality time with Mom, the risks to her immediate well-being due to her illness were mitigated by the Hospice's professional staff and Mom was able to spend her final days comfortable and at peace. Mom passed March 1, 2021 at Hospice Halifax due to her progressing lymphoma.
The picture below is of my Mom and sister in her room at Hospice Halifax visiting with the newest member of our family, Cecily. These moments were only possible due to the care, compassion and professionalism of the staff at Hospice Halifax. These are the types of moments that future guests of Hospice Halifax will get to share with their loved ones with the funds given by donors like you!
Hospice Halifax is partially funded by Capital Health, but the portion funded by them is decreasing- leaving the rest of their budget to made up by fundraising efforts. Guests at Halifax Hospice do not pay for their stay- there they rely heavily on money given by donors- which is where this fundraiser comes in.
Bikes 'n Bagpipes
I plan to cycle +/- 2500km around the old highways of Nova Scotia to raise funds for Hospice Halifax. I will be busking with my bagpipes along the way to break up the time on the road. Donations can be made through this GoFundMe- or by donating spare change which will be deposited to this fund along the way.
