Oakland International High School serves over three hundred and eighty students who speak more than thirty-two languages and come from thirty-three countries as immigrants and refugees. One hundred percent of our students are English language learners, all of whom immigrated to the U.S. during the last four years. No student is anonymous here, and the model supports personalization, growth, and success for each student. We cannot control the outside world of our students, but what we can do is ensure that they feel safe and supported by our school community.
During the pandemic, while students are engaging in distance learning, opportunities to feel free and exercise their mind and body are limited. In the past, students at our school had the opportunity to bike after school every Friday as a part of our after school program to explore different parts of the Bay Area. Unfortunately, this program cannot continue during the pandemic, but we still want students can feel the freedom and joy of bike riding.
Thanks to community support thus far, in the past three months together we have:
-Collected over 70 donated bikes
-Repaired 26 bikes (thanks to incredible bike maintenance expert neighbors who have volunteered their time over multiple days and donations from many of you to purchase the supplies)
-Received 32 new U-locks and 10 new helmets (thanks to a DonorsChoose fundraiser and all who have donated to this campaign!)
-Provided 36 bikes with locks and helmets to students at OIHS and their siblings
What is coming up this month and beyond:
16 students and their siblings are on the waitlist (and the list keeps growing!!!), waiting to be matched with a bike
In order for us to make sure these students get bikes, we are in need of more helmets, U-locks and bike maintenance tools and supplies.
The costs:
$35 for each helmet
$35 for each u-lock
~ $400- Bike tools and supplies (patch kits, tubes, tires, cables and casing)
All of the money raised from this fundraiser will go directly to purchasing these items to support the bike program!
Thank you for your support!
