WHAT, WHY, AND WHO?
WHAT IT IS:
Ben and Luc are riding their bicycles over 4,000 miles around the Western United States this fall. Starting from San Francisco, we will be traveling for the next two and a half months through Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and Nevada. This journey will be completely unsupported, as we will be carrying all of our own food, camping gear, supplies, clothes, etc. on our bikes at all times during this trip. On this tour we might experience riding through some extreme snow in the mountains of Montana, fleeing from grizzly bears in Wyoming, highways with no shoulders for bicyclists, and most likely several other treacherous incidents.
WHY WE ARE DOING IT:
After graduating from high school this year, Ben from Marin Academy in California, and Luc from Sunset in Oregon, agreed that a gap year focused on personal development, self discovery, and service would prove invaluable. We chose to do this tour so that we could develop a more intimate understanding of our great country and the many diverse communities and regions that comprise it. While much of the reasoning behind this trip was to witness and appreciate the incredible national parks such as Glacier, Yellowstone, and Zion, we are also doing this trip to raise money for two organizations that are pertinent to each of us individually.
Ben:
The organization that I chose to support during this trip is the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Breast cancer is one of the most serious medical problems in the nation, as approximately 12% of women in the U.S will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their life. It is an issue that has affected many people close to me or my family, including the head of my high school, Travis Brownley. I chose the BCRF to support the strong research that they do in breast cancer prevention, in support of women like Travis and the thousands of families affected by breast cancer in the country. Luc:
In the wake of the horrific carnage of Hurricane Dorian, a considerable subset of the Bahama's inhabitants have been largely overlooked. Alone in the flooded rubble of what was once their home and sanctuary, these innocent souls have little to no means of seeking the aide they desperately need. These are the circumstances of many of Bahama's stray animals. Among the most gravely affected islands in Dorian's wake is Grand Bahama, where more than 90 cats and dogs died in the flooding of the Humane Society of Grand Bahama shelters alone. Six heroic volunteers stayed to brave the storm and minimize the losses, saving upwards of 150 cats and dogs sheltered within the facility. 5 of these 6 workers lost their homes in the storms wake and the primary shelter itself was critically damaged. While substantial donations and efforts are being made to support the people of the Bahamas, thousands of displaced, vulnerable animals have been largely overlooked. I have decided to raise money for the animals of the Grand Bahama through the Kohn Foundation, a nonprofit 503c3 organization that directly supports the Humane Society of Grand Bahama. Please consider sponsoring our efforts for the sake of these innocent, vulnerable animals and the brave volunteers that have sacrificed so much already.
