A dream of mine is to ride again.
At the age of 12 I became disabled with spastic paralysis. In other words, when ever my legs get a spasm, they become paralyzed. These spasms occur more when my legs are extended. As a teenage and young adult, I would ride a bicycle with some difficulties but still managed okay. As time progressed, it became more difficult to the point where I could not ride again. This was about 16 years ago when I lost the ability to ride a bicycle. Since, I have become dependent on the use of a manual wheelchair. Currently I use a manual wheelchair for most of my traveling for in town errands.
Last year I started having some health issues and realized that I am not as healthy as I could be. As you can imagine, getting great exercise while confined to a wheelchair, is not the easiest task. After lots and lots of research I discovered this really cool thing called a hand-cycle attachment that can be easily attached to my manual wheelchair.
After talking with my doctor about it, he agreed that a hand-cycle would be a great way to get exercise and keep my heart healthy. He enthusiastically wrote me a prescription only for me to find out my insurance does not really care if I get any cardio exercise. I have explored many different avenues for getting assistance with purchasing a hand-cycle attachment for my manual wheelchair with all calls & e-mails resulting in a dead end.
As hard as this is for me, this is me setting my pride of independence aside to ask all of you for just a small bit of help to assist me in achieving a huge goal that will help improve my health greatly.
No contribution is too small or will go unappreciated.
