Help Life Academy's 8th Graders Get to Big Trees State Park!
To celebrate students' growth and readiness for high school, we want to take all our 8th graders to Big Trees State Park for a three-day physical and emotional adventure. This will be a trip of many acts of bravery for our students. For most, it’s their first real camping trip, first time in a deep dark cave, first time rock climbing, first time in a towering redwood forest, and first time telling profoundly personal stories. These firsts give students a chance to support each other as they push to overcome fears.
For the last five years, Life Academy of Health and Bioscience (located in Oakland, CA) has brought our entire class of 8th Graders to Calaveras County for their 8th Grade Retreat. On this trip, we go to Moaning Caverns, paddle board on White Pines Lake, hike, and camp for two nights in Big Trees State Park to celebrate the end of students' middle school career. It's been amazing! :)

Last year, our trip to Big Trees State Park was unfortunately cancelled due to the unseasonably late snow. But, because of our donors, we were still able to give our students an amazing bonding experience. On Day One, when it was pouring, we took all our students to see Avengers: End Game, and the movie theatre rippled with their excited energy. On Day Two, we went to Joaquin Miller Park for hiking, an epic game of Capture the Flag, and tasty (student-prepared) BBQ. Lastly, for Day Three, we were able to take a bus out to the Tennessee Valley Trailhead in Marin for a day at the beach together. While students were bummed about the snow in Big Trees, they certainly enjoyed their adventures together in these new places.

This year, we are hopeful for excellent weather during our 8th Grade Retreat, which will take place from 5/19/20 - 5/21/20.
We will be doing to do this trip again for the Class of 2024, but - yet again - due to a lack of school and district funding, we are in need of the generosity of our greater community.
Both the trips of 2017, 2018, and 2019 were COMPLETELY funded by altruistic donations, and we are still so incredibly grateful! This year, without your support, we will not be able to afford the most wonderful and exciting parts of our trip: the cave, the paddle boards, and the healthy food.

Our informal motto at LIFE is “We want you (students) to know you are loved and limitless.” This trip will serve as a capstone reminder of all we have done to make this motto real. We want students to return home knowing they can push themselves physically, academically, and interpersonally. We want them to know they have peers and adults who love them, trust them, and will support them. As students face their first day of high school, we want them to know they are ready and not alone.
Please help us give our students the experience they DESERVE!
