Can you help us keep reporting on the Big Bend of far west Texas through the COVID-19 crisis?
The Big Bend Gazette has been publishing for 16 1/2 years. Since the summer of 2003, publisher and journalist (and paper boy) John Waters has been front and center of this business, based in Alpine and Terlingua, Texas. Plus, we have regular contributors (writers, photographers, copyeditors, proofreaders), and a graphic designer.
Because advertising revenue is the bulk of our revenue, and many of our advertisers have been hit hard by the plummet in tourism (the main economic engine in this region), we are facing drastically reduced income. Normally, that advertising revenue stream enables us to pay our staff, utilities, and all other business expenses while we report the news from this vast, sparsely populated, and beautiful area. Your donations will provide this money in place of the loss of income from our regular advertisers, which we hope is only temporary.
The Big Bend Gazette is normally printed monthly, and delivered to vendors throughout the region, and mailed to several hundred subscribers nationwide. Printing and mailing this news monthly is expensive and time-consuming. For now, especially given the rapid news cycle, we will most likely go to an online, digital format only for delivering the news.
We feel a great responsibility and honor to continue to serve you in this community in which we live, and to deliver to you (in print and/or digital formats) the news you need and want. Now more than ever, it's essential that we stay informed and connected.
