Oliver's Journey

My son was born 25th February 2017, when he was 5 weeks old he was admitted to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (Newcastle) . They discovered a brain tumour. He underwent a 12 and a half hour operation to remove as much of the tumour that was surrounding his brain stem as they could. The incredible surgeon managed to remove two thirds of it, he then spent 10 agonising days in Pediatric Intensive Care Unit fighting for his life. on Day 7 of being in PICU as I was sleeping in Crawford House (living accommodation for parents of children in Intensive Care on hospital grounds) I recieved a phone call at 3am with devastating news that Oliver may not make the night, rushed to be by his bedside. They arranged an Emergency CT scan, which revealed a bleed on the brain. He went straight to theatre and the amazing surgeon stopped the bleed. 2 days after Oliver was then moved to a ward. We then Found out that the tumour was Malignant (cancerous) then was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma. He had 24 weeks of Intense Chemotherapy, was given the all clear after the first 8 week cycle but had to continue his other 2 cycles (16 weeks, 2 x 8 week cycles) he was then in remission

His regular MRI scans had been clear until Thursday 14th February 2019 discovering that it had sadly returned. He returned to theatre and they successfully removed the whole tumour. He then had 5 weeks of high dose (monday to friday) chemotherapy as an outpatient. He then went into remission again.

Oliver continued to get regular MRI scans, April 2020 we sadly learnt that it had returned again, with 2 tumours this time and some 'spots' with him already having chemotherapy twice intensive and high dose they couldn't do anymore, as it would basically poison him. so this time he needs to have radiotherapy. which is due to start 26th May 2020
