Austin is an 18 month old little boy that has just been diagnosed with high risk Neuroblastoma. He is currently at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, Egleston. His parents, Shari and Andrew Brunk, noticed he was not feeling well a few weeks ago. They took him to several urgent cares as well as their pediatrician, who gave them few answers . They decided to go ahead and take him to CHOA, where on February 12, they discovered he had high risk Neuroblastoma. Neuroblastoma is a rare cancer that affects the adrenal glands of the kidneys and is most commonly found in children under the age of 5. Austin's MRI has shown that he has a large tumor on his left kidney and it has spread to several little ones in his chest cavity. He underwent surgery on February 13th to place a port in his aorta for chemotherapy as well as to collect bone marrow in order to determine if the cancer has spread to his marrow. Austin started chemotherapy on February 16th.
This is the beginning of Austin's journey. It may last for several years and could include many more surgeries and rounds of chemo. CHOA, Egleston has a specialist that focuses on this type of cancer and families come there from all across the country for treatment. CHOA offers many different therapies to help fight this cancer. Here is a link that describes some of the therapies they offer https://www.choa.org/medical-services/cancer-and-blood-disorders/cancer/neuroblastoma-program .
Austin is very much loved and adored by his parents, who are staying with him 24/7 at the hospital. He has a little 4 month old sister, Alyssa, that is staying with grandparents. This process is going to be very expensive and grueling. Shari will not be able to keep her job. The medical bills will start to pile up and any donations will go to those. We are asking for any help we can get for the family, prayers included!
Thank you and we will be updating as we continue down this journey.
