Hey, everybody! I'm Abby Riley and in a little over 5 months, I will be embarking on a year of mission work in South America through Adventures in Missions company on a trip called "The World Race".
"The World Race" is a mission operation that works to bring aid, support, and the basic Gospel message to 11 countries in 11 months. Through our South American expedition, we will be traveling to all 13 countries that make up the continent in an effort to be the response to the struggles and problems the people face every day. It's a huge undertaking and I'm still letting all of this next step in my life sink in.
To be completely honest, I was really turned-off by the idea of an adventure style mission, not because it didn't sound like a dream come true but because I was worried about its effectiveness. How in the world are we expected to bring about any kind of lasting change while bouncing around the globe? In the words of a parody video, "Church sponsored sight-seeing trips don't count" as mission. I felt like I had already figured Adventures in Missions out. I couldn't have been more wrong.
Through seeing the amazing effects that The World Race has had on former racers, something was made very clear to me- mission is HARD. In the crazy 'refining you through the fire' kind of way. It breaks you of your selfishness. You learn to live for other people you hardly even know. It opens your eyes to your incredible priveldges that other people from impoverished countries can't even fathom. I want to be broken for love of the poor and lonely because a life serving myself is so terribly empty. I'm ready for something bigger than me.
So here's what I'm asking from you, my fellow missionaries, friends, lovers of the broken and forgotten people in this world: the opportunity that I can't afford for myself. The opportunity to give what I have to people who need resources, love, and hope, because someone gave to me first.
I'm going to be living in a tent and out of a backpack for 11 months so I'm going to need a lot of supplies. With your help, I can buy my backpack, equipment, and even cover travel expenses. I need the money by July so I can buy and test out my gear before the race.
Thanks so much, everyone! I couldn't be more grateful to everyone who has been willing to give me much needed support. Your charity inspires me so much and only makes me more excited to give what I have to the people of South America too. If you would like to follow my trip, my blog is [email redacted]
