Meet Beyta – she is a four-year-old Shiba rescue from Taiwan. At first glance you would never know that she has a handicap. She was born with Luxating Patella, which means she has no knee joints. Not only did Beyta survive an unsuccessful surgery in Taiwan, but she also suffered horrible abuse. When she came to Canada she was quiet and reserved, but in a safe foster home with kind humans she grew more confident. Her natural warmth began to show and she wins the hearts of everyone she meets; human and fur friends (even the cat!) She won the heart of her new parents Rych and Alysha at their very first visit and that wasn’t an easy task. They had recently lost a beloved dog to cancer and were naturally cautious. For a small dog Beyta is a warrior! When you watch her run you realize it is more of a three-legged hop; one of her legs can’t take any weight. However, she doesn't realize she has a disability. She jumps up onto the sofa or bed without hesitating and manages the flight of stairs to the backyard multiple times a day. Until this week. Suddenly she was in pain and couldn’t get around by herself anymore. Her parents rushed to the Vancouver Veterinary hospital, and the prognosis is discouraging. While the surgeons think they can give her a better quality of life, the cost of the procedure is daunting. Like many of us Covid has put a real strain on her family’s budget. Beyta’s health and comfort are their first concern but they are not sure they can manage the bill themselves. Can you help?
