I teach a small, mixed-grade group of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade newcomer students in the English Language Development (ELD) program at Silver Creek Middle School in Kensington, Maryland.
My students are building English skills while also learning how to find their place in a new school and community. When we discussed ways to explore local resources, students expressed enthusiastic interest in a National Zoo field trip. Many of my students have had limited opportunities to experience the resources around them in the D.C. area, and this trip will give students the opportunity to visit a local environment that is welcoming, engaging, and full of opportunities to learn together.
This project will fund the $390 needed for bus transportation and parking so that this field trip can be provided at no cost to students. During the trip, students will practice real-world language skills by reading informational signs, talking with partners, and making observations about what they see. Experiences like this help students connect classroom learning to the world around them while building confidence, curiosity, and a stronger sense of belonging in our community.
Your support helps open the door for my students to explore their new community, practice English in authentic ways, and create shared memories that strengthen our classroom community. Thank you!
