The Julio Otoni favela is in the neighbourhood of Santa Teresa in Rio de Janeiro. In 2004, the neighbourhood opened a new community centre which saw the lights thanks to the efforts of Thais Corral, who brought together a small group of organizations such as REDEH, CEMINA, JIVE, Intituto Polen and the Jinga Project, to be able to offer a solid programme of Support classes and activities for residents, running 4 days per week.
After three months teaching and living at Julio Otoni there are two areas where funding would be most welcome.
· Funding for those finishing secondary school and moving onto university or professional courses.
· Funding for adult women: single mums, working women, unemployed etc, who would want to enroll in a course.
The goal is to gather funds so a number of Booster Fund Packs can be awarded to some of the current and potential new students. Each Booster Fund Pack recipient will be awarded £500 to be spent in Tuition fees, Acquisition of new IT equipment and coverage of transport fees. The process will be overseen by Viviana Herrera, founder of JIVE and a personal friend of mine. Students will pick their courses but, just so you get an idea, we have researched courses with the Red Cross in elderly care, Courses at the L’Oreal academy, Software courses at Cedaspy, English and Spanish courses at Fisk academy etc
The original idea would be to provide 2 Booster Fund Packs to teenage students moving on from secondary education and 2 for adult women wishing to take a professional course. It all depends on how much we can raise. A small amount of money £150 would be used to take the 40 students on an educational day trip.
I now invite you to meet our Uni hopefuls. You will also get a glimpse of them in the group picture standing on the left.
Lucas Farias Sotto Mayor Abitam: Lucas lives at the Julio Otoni favela with his mother Patricia. Lucas is almost 17 and is looking forward to studying engineering at University next year. He loves videogames and excels at Physics, English, Maths and Chemistry.
Matheus Alves dos Santos: Matheus lives at the Julio Otoni favela with his mother Eliane and his two siblings Yan e Vitoria. Matheus will turn 18 in November and is preparing to go to Uni later this year. He would like to study Accounting or Business administration. He loves playing football and going to the beach. He loves Geography, English and Maths.
In order to help raise money, the students at the community centre have created 3 paintings. The paintings are gouache on canvas and all the colour mixes have been created from Primary colours. They were on display at London’s OXO Tower Bargehouse, Oxo Tower Wharf, South Bank, between the 30 August 2019 - 1 September 2019.
They are now looking for an owner....so if you fancy what you see please let me know!

O Programa
A campanha ‘Boost Fund Pack’ visa fornecer aos alunos iniciantes uma ajuda financeira para fazer frente aos muitos custos que enfrentam, desde transporte a livros, inscrição, alojamento etc. Estas bolsas de estudos são destinadas apenas a estudantes iniciantes do primeiro ano do ensino superior, cursos técnicos e cursos profissionalizantes.
A seção sobre cursos profissionalizantes é voltada especificamente para mulheres que têm pouco tempo livre e recursos limitados (mães solteiras/com filhos/trabalhadoras), e gostariam de fazer um curso para redirecionar sua carreira professional.
As Bolsas
O número de bolsas e seus valores, mostrados abaixo, são indicativos e dependen do valor total arrecadado pela campanha.
2 x bolsas para ensino universitário e cursos técnicos de mais de 1000horas. O valor das bolsas de estudos do ensino superior deverá ser de cerca de 400 a 500GBP (aprox 2400 reais)
3 x bolsas para cursos profissionalizantes. As bolsas de estudos para cursos profissionalizantes terão como objetivo cobrir o custo total ou parcial da inscrição no curso e fornecer uma pequena ajuda financeira para despesas de transporte e relacionadas ao curso, até um máximo total de 200 a 300GBP (aprox 1300 reais)
